PURE in action: Can renewable energy deliver across diverse industries?
The shift toward sustainability is accelerating, and renewable energy is increasingly valued not just for clean power but for its ability to drive productive use, turning clean electrons into tangible economic and social value. Building on ARE Member Asantys Systems‘ previous work, here are two of the latest projects under our Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) philosophy, showing measurable impact across industries.
In Pointe-Sarène, Senegal, four solar-powered flake ice machines are transforming the local fishing industry. Fishers previously relied on costly and inconsistent diesel or grid electricity, resulting in fish spoilage and income instability. Each ice machine is powered by a 27 kWp PV system with 57.6 kWh energy storage, enabling fully off-grid, sustainable operation. Each produces up to 83 kg of ice per hour, or approximately 1 tonne over a 12-hour day, preserving fish, reducing spoilage, and stabilising incomes. Energy-efficient inverter technology and operator training ensure reliable, long-term performance.

In Jinja, Uganda, the AfricroozE solar e-mobility hub shows how renewable energy can support sustainable transport. Powered by a 7.47 kWp solar system with 15.36 kWh battery storage, the hub provides off-grid charging for electric bicycles used by farmers, entrepreneurs, and students. An e-mobility hub is a community facility that provides charging, maintenance, and support for electric vehicles, in this project, it was customised specifically to charge electric bicycles for local users. Asantys Systems also trained local technicians ensures knowledge transfer and sustainable operations, making the project a scalable model for decentralised, productive renewable energy use.
These projects demonstrate a key insight: renewable energy delivers the most value when it aligns with local economic activities, whether enabling off-grid e-bike charging or supporting decentralised electricity use to boost productivity, reduce costs, and create social and environmental benefits.
PURE is not just a concept, it is a blueprint for turning renewable energy into real-world impact across industries and communities. For updates, detailed case studies, or to learn more about our upcoming cold room project, contact us:
