Senior Mechanical Engineer



Job description

247Solar, Inc. is seeking a hands-on Senior Mechanical Engineer to engineer product components. This position reports to the Lead Engineer. Responsibilities include ability to perform the following with minimal supervision:

  • Engineer system components including solar receiver, high temperature piping, and insulation systems.
  • Specify and select vendor engineered components by working directly with suppliers, including high-temperature materials and specialty components, including dampers, expansion joints, blowers, pumps, and heat exchangers.
  • Perform engineering calculations including: pressure drop, heat loss, mechanical stress, etc.
  • Develop and manage product BOMs.
  • Write engineering reports documenting calculations and engineering results.
  • Write test plans, conduct tests and present results to engineering team.
  • Travel to other 247Solar locations to collaborate with other team members in United States and Internationally.

Ideal Candidate Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or comparable discipline, Masters degree preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years experience engineering and testing mechanical system components, including at least 5 years experience in at least one, and preferably multiple, of the following: high-temperature materials, concentrated solar power system design, heliostats, thermal energy storage, and renewable power plant design.
  • Deep understanding of concentrated solar power technology (heliostats, energy storage, power generation) and its applications.
  • Robust experience with all aspects of complex high-temperature system engineering, including:
    – Designing and performing tests at component and system level.
    – Developing engineering models for temperature, pressure, stress, etc in high temperature systems.
    – Performing engineering design trade studies to evaluate and select optimal design options.
    – Translating engineering models into supplier specifications.
    – Assessing supplier technical capabilities
    – Developing and managing all engineering documentation including BOMs, drawings, reports, test plans, etc.
  • Experience utilising Solidworks preferred.
  • Understands mechanical drawing generation including GD&T .
  • Strong fundamental engineering skills, particularly thermodynamics, fluids, power generation systems, and electrical.
  • Ability to deliver engineering analyses and documents on schedule and with impeccable quality.
  • Experience working in virtual teams in multiple time zones and cultures.
  • Desire to work in a small dynamic team.
  • Must have excellent written and oral English communication skills.

The chosen candidate can work from anywhere. Salary will be commensurate with local salary ranges for comparable positions. As a team member of an early-stage company, the salary portion of compensation may not meet large-company levels. However, the base salary is competitive, and the Senior Engineer will be rewarded on the basis of the company’s future success and increased value in the form of a stock option plan.
