Hardware Engineer



Job description

As a Hardware Engineer you will play a core role in Okra’s mission. You will be responsible for designing and releasing our next generation, last mile electrification devices that ingeniously bring power to over 700,000,000 people around the globe. Okra’s lean structure means you’ll have a direct line with the Product Team – so your advice will be pivotal for product strategy and architecture definition. In the same vein, you will apply rigorous documentation and strict processes towards achieving 100% production yield and zero field failures on high volume production runs and remote field installations.

Okra is a global team and you will also be working with colleagues based in different time zones, e.g. China, USA, Nigeria.

Responsibilities

  • Outlining technical requirements from high-level product requirements and applicable norms
  • Designing and developing embedded systems, from architecture definition, through electrical schematics, to PCB design, its release process, prototyping and mass production
  • Supporting test campaigns and manufacturing runs, when needed
  • Using and improving industry best practice on product lifecycle management processes

Hard Skills

  • Understanding systems engineering principles, especially full embedded system architectures
  • Solid experience with PCB design and release processes and tools
  • Experience or exposure to related disciplines, such as
    • Power electronics
    • Micro-controllers and embedded systems
    • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and
    • Industrial mechanical design / design for manufacturing
    • Manufacturing processes (molding, casting, 3D printing, etc)
    • Control theory/PIDs
    • Analog and digital communication physics, systems and protocols
    • Certification and regulatory aspects
  • Comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience with common lab and test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, etc)
  • Toolkit: KiCad, Altium, or similar; C++, Python

Required Experience

  • Graduate in Electrical Engineering, Electronics or similar
  • Hands-on experience with embedded system design, prototyping, testing and manufacturing
  • Working under an development framework, such as the V model (or equivalent)
  • Experience in bringing a product from concept to market will be highly valued
  • 3+ years of relevant professional experience

Nice to Have

  • Leadership and management experience in the context of small squads/teams
  • Knowledge of hardware-adjacent disciplines, such as embedded/firmware
  • Experience on interfacing with suppliers and contract manufacturers
  • Experience in a startup environment
