In a joint initiative, the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE), African Development Bank (AfDB) and International Finance Corporation (IFC) developed a technical assistance and capacity-building project:

Development of Guidance Materials, Capacity Building Resources, and Training Activities for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Compliance in the African Mini-Grid Sector

The key objectives include:

1. providing practical guidance for mini-grid developers to apply ESG standards, particularly the AfDB’s Integrated Safeguards System (ISS) and IFC Performance Standards (IFC PS);
2. standardising ESG compliance approaches;
3. creating practical tools, templates, and resources; and
4. enhancing capacity through training and technical assistance.
