International Day of Clean Energy: Powering a Sustainable Future
Established in 2023 by the United Nations, the International Day of Clean Energy is observed annually on 26 January, highlighting the critical role of clean and renewable energy in ensuring a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future for everyone.
Clean energy refers to all those sources that produce little to no greenhouse gas emissions, such as solar, hydro, small and airborne wind, bioenergy, and green hydrogen. Along with these technologies, battery and energy storage systems (BESS) play a very important role, ensuring continuous access to energy even when production is low.

Although these sources are essential to tackling climate change, the International Clean Energy Day draws attention to the issue of energy access. With 730 million (IEA) people still lacking access to electricity, the role of DRE technologies in driving economic growth and improving livelihoods is a primary one. Clean energy is, therefore, not only an environmental imperative but also a matter of equity and human development.
This observance encourages governments, businesses, and civil society to strengthen policies, mobilise financing, and foster international cooperation in support of clean energy transitions. It also serves as a reminder that individual actions matter. Energy efficiency, responsible consumption, and support for clean energy initiatives all contribute to broader systemic change.
The Alliance for Rural Electrification strongly supports the need for investments, clear policies, and technological standardisation for mass and fast deployment of clean energy solutions worldwide. By embracing these solutions today, the global community can protect the planet, empower communities, and lay the foundation for a more sustainable and prosperous future for generations to come.
