Solar Mini-Grid Engineer (COREN Registered)
Job description
A COREN-registered electrical engineer to support the end-to-end technical execution of ARE Membe Welight Africa’s solar mini-grid projects in Nigeria. The role involves contractor oversight, site survey, load assessment, plant/network design, regulatory compliance, and cross-team coordination with local and foreign departments.
Key responsibilities
Mini-grid Deployment
- Ensure contractors deliver sites and/or associated works on-spec and on-time
- Confirm adherence to standards (NEMSA etc.) of ongoing and planned works
- Physically inspect ongoing and completed works (materials arrival, equipment installation, commissioning)
- Verify technical receipts (materials, designs) against contract specs
- Support troubleshooting of on-site issues (e.g., grid integration, safety compliance)
Technical Design & Costing
- Support local site survey teams
- Conduct load assessments from field surveys to determine energy demand/load profiling
- Design solar hybrid plants and electrical pole networks (MV/LV distribution) based on field survey outputs
- Assess existing national grid infrastructure for integration feasibility
- Estimate solar plant financials (CAPEX/OPEX modelling)
- Draft clear technical reports for DisCos, investors, regulators (NERC, NEMSA) and HQ
- Support grants and financing programs applications and reports
Operation & Maintenance
- Oversee Operations & Maintenance Teams
- Perform energy audits to identify opportunities for energy efficiency and sustainability improvements
- Provide post-installation technical support, including troubleshooting, performance analysis, and maintenance guidance
- Ensure compliance with NERC, NEMSA, and COREN regulations throughout project lifecycle
Qualifications
Must-Have:
- COREN registration
- Experience in solar mini-grid/off-grid design (including pole network design and load profiling)
- Proficiency in Excel (advanced formulas, financial modelling)
- Strong verbal/written communication (reports, stakeholder updates)
- Experience working in rural sites
Added Advantages:
- Experience with computer networking and remote communications
- Experience installing and using smart meters, optimisation
- Costing and procurement experience (10 kWp–500 kWp solar plants)
- Knowledge of NEMSA grid codes and NERC permitting
- Understanding of the minigrid industry landscape
