Job description

Role brief

As the Hardware Team Lead at BBOXX you will work alongside a team of multi-disciplinary engineers to produce market-leading products for the off-grid energy sector across the developing world. Your main role will be to manage Bboxx’s hardware development team, both in new product design and in continuously improving our existing range of products.  Your team will include electrical, firmware and mechanical engineers, and you will manage and mentor them, defining their day-to-day work tasks, supporting them in delivering those tasks, and helping guide their professional development. You will lead the engineering interactions with our production team and manufacturing partners in China, as well as suppliers, vendors and other partners that Bboxx works with to ensure our products are best-in-class in terms of cost, quality, and performance.
You will be proactive, results-focused, and will lead your team by example. You’ll be from an Electrical or Firmware Engineering background with a strong understanding of hardware development. You will have experience designing and developing products from inception through to medium-large volume manufacture, and you will also understand the importance of designing for mass production and have experience bringing great products to market

 

About the role

  • Manage a team of electronics engineers, embedded systems (firmware) engineers, and mechanical designers to develop new products and continuously improve existing ones.
  • Convert user requirements from Product Owners and other stakeholders into work tasks for your engineering team and drive delivery of these tasks, on time and to high quality.
  • Work closely with the other Devices team leads (Quality, Support) to identify and resolve issues experienced in production or in the field.
  • Work with the Head of Devices to develop and refine product development / improvement roadmaps.
  • Mentor and develop your team of engineers.
  • Act as gatekeeper on product quality, ensuring our hardware designs and firmware code are robust and of high quality.
  • Manage handover of engineering changes and new product designs to the Asia manufacturing team.
  • Liaise with suppliers and equipment vendors to source the right parts at the best cost.

 

About you

  • 5+ years professional experience in circuit design and simulation, schematic entry and PCBA layout using industry stand tools (Altium) OR IoT firmware development using C and RTOS.
  • Team leadership and project planning experience in Scrum or Kanban.
  • An understanding of DFM (design for manufacturing) and DFT (design for testing) to ensure successful medium-high volume production.
  • Proven analogue and power supply design and debug experience OR an understanding of software architecture patterns and best practices for embedded software.
  • An effective communicator, a 'can-do' attitude and an engaging team leader.
  • Experience with Jira/Confluence for task management and documentation as well as git or equivalent for source code maintenance.
  • Experience in some or all of the following areas would be highly advantageous:
    • Lithium battery operation and functionality,
    • Solar power, particularly in the sub-500W range,
    • IoT communications particularly GSM/GPRS,
    • Gas metering or flow control systems.
