Job description

Role brief

The Director of Engineering will manage up to five R&D and Applications Engineering teams based in Germany and the USA respectively to meet their strategic innovation and market development objectives. They are responsible for the management of all project timelines, departmental budgets, recruitment, and staff development for the entirety of our global Engineering teams. In addition, the Director of Engineering will develop and implement scalable processes, documentation methods, and controls to ensure transparency and continuity across all global Engineering teams.

 

About the role

  • Manages and mentors the Field Applications Engineering team and up to four Vertical R&D teams: Solar Charge Controllers, Inverters, Energy Storage, IoT/Software U/I.
  • Oversees all global R&D projects to ensure projects are completed on time, on budget and within scope.
  • Collaborates with Product Managers to develop timely, innovative solutions to meet and exceed market requirements.
  • Collaborates with Vertical R&D managers to develop and implement all engineering standards, processes and controls to ensure superior quality products that meet brand standards.
  • Engages in the professional development of all current and future Phocos engineers to continually keep Phocos at the forefront of innovation while providing opportunities for employee advancement.
  • Responsible for the preparation and management of annual Engineering budgets, project-level budgeting, and calculation of NRE fees.
  • Identifies and actively recruits Engineering talent to add value to the Global Engineering team.
  • Stays current on the latest innovation and development trends and provides strategic advice to Executive Management on ways to improve efficiency, save costs, improve customer value.
  • Works with Vertical R&D Manager to Establish departmental and individual Objectives and Key Results (“OKRs”), performs regular check-ins with Engineering staff to measure progress.
  • Supplies Executive Management with regular progress reports for all Engineering projects.
  • Serves as the spokesperson for the Engineering department at Company meetings, trade events and provides the content to Marketing/Product Management staff on behalf of the Engineering team.

 

About you

  • Demonstrated skill at managing teams, building relationships, motivating, and establishing trust with diverse, global Engineering teams both locally and remotely.
  • Strong familiarity with common DC and AC power conversion topologies and technology.
  • General knowledge of common Energy Storage chemistries and properties thereof.
  • Highly proficient in managing multiple projects concurrently while setting and maintaining deadlines that are both realistic and aggressive.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and problem resolution skills.
  • Team-oriented, self-starter driven by continual improvement.
  • Strong communication, reporting, and presentation skills.
  • Proficient user of commonly used project management, teamwork software (MS Project, Jira, Confluence, Trello, GitHub etc.)
  • Previous success with implementing Engineering processes, standards, and controls.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues & problems internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated experience with identifying and managing company risk.
  • Ability to assess individual skills and deficiencies of Engineering staff to maximise value to the company and engage in staff professional development activities.
  • Occasional domestic/international travel may be required up to 20%.

Required Experience and Education:

  • 5+ years of experience in an Engineering Management role
  • 5+ years of experience managing multiple Engineering projects concurrently
  • 10+ years of experience in an Electronics Research and Development capacity
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, Systems Engineering or related field
  • Fluent in English

Preferred Experience and Education:

  • 5+ Years of experience developing power electronics, IoT networking, Photovoltaic equipment and/or Energy Storage products.
  • 5+ Years of experience on a multi-cultural, International Engineering team.
  • 5+ Years in a production engineering capacity.
  • 5+ Years of Applications experience involving Photovoltaics and Energy Storage.
  • Fluent in German and/or Mandarin.
  • Master’s Degree in Electrical, Computer, Mechanical Engineering or MBA
