Role brief

We are looking for a motivated and energetic individual with an interest in gaining experience in the international development consultancy sector. Are you looking for that first step into your career as a development consultant? Do you have the energy and drive to provide our team with the support they need to write competitive high-quality bids and deliver effective high impact technical consultancy projects?  Are you self-driven and passionate about making a real difference? About the role

Business Development :

  • You will support the technical teams (particularly agriculture and energy teams) in winning new consultancy work by identifying opportunities and supporting proposal/concept development.
    • This will provide the experience of different aspects of business development and the funding environment including: sourcing opportunities; supporting drafting of technical proposals; engaging external experts and budgeting.
  • You will support the building of a strong network of associate consultants (international and local/regional consultants/experts) and help maintain PAC’s consultants’ database.  
  • You will support mapping and intelligence-gathering re. our clients (potential and current) within our regional areas of operation, and regarding the technical areas within our agriculture/markets and energy work (in particular around Productive Uses of Energy.
    • You will also assist the technical teams in client relationship management tracking (CRM).
       

Project Delivery Support:

  • You will provide demand-driven project delivery support, with a special focus on productive uses of energy, project elements will include, but are not limited to:
    • Technical research and analysis.
    • Production of project reports and briefing papers.
    • The design and facilitation of online events such as webinars and other events.
    • Knowledge capture and dissemination of project work across the technical areas of Agriculture and Energy.
    • Support to project management, budgeting and MEL (Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning).
    • Support to manage associate experts/partners
       

Business Administration:

  • You will provide ad hoc assistance with PAC administrative functions, for example: updating various databases and project award systems, assisting with procurement/scanning activities, spot-checking and assisting with project files and record-keeping.
     

Learning and Development:

  • You will be supported to develop your skills and knowledge in both project delivery and business development within a consultancy setting (including up skilling in developing concept notes, writing proposals, identifying potential team members and delivery partners, and developing budgets).
  • There will be a focus on mentoring/coaching and learning-by-doing, but there will also be opportunity to access some specific formal training in liaison with your Line Manager, we also have an in-house ‘academy’ where you will have access to a host of courses and resources.
  • You will be encouraged, supported, and provided with space to develop your technical expertise on the interface between agriculture and energy. 
  • You will have the opportunity to learn from colleagues in PAC’s overseas (global) offices as well as the wider PA Group.

About you

Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • A relevant undergraduate degree or equivalent in one of PAC’s technical areas (or a related area, such as international development).
  • Ability to analyse, synthesise and summarise complex information, and write succinct and informative reports.
  • Knowledge of relevant international development issues (e.g. rural development in developing countries, sustainable agriculture, and climate change).
  • Knowledge and/or experience in Energy Access, small scale agriculture, micro-enterprise/SMEs/business models or Productive uses of energy would be an advantage.
     

Skills and Experience:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong team working and interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Data management/analytical skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English essential. A second language would be an advantage (e.g. French or Portuguese).
  • Self-motivation, commitment and interest in Practical Action’s aim of using technology to challenge poverty and empower poor communities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritise workload.
  • Interest/motivation to work with multi-cultural teams and engage with our global offices.
  • A sound understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion across all dimensions.
  • Some experience of administrative/co-ordination roles would be an advantage (this can be in the voluntary sector).
