FastPower has delivered its off grid solutions in the Andean Area, a case developed with the Government of Lima for rural villages. Most of the population of Peru lives in remote rural areas, often at very disadvantageous locations. Numbers say grid electricity is used by 39% of the rural households, a tiny fraction of households, 0.6% have generators.
Looking only at rural households without electricity, the most common source of energy for lighting comes from kerosene (80% of rural households) and candles (65% of rural households). But any project to bring electricity in rural areas must face one heavy issue: many sites are far from main cities with no grid connectivity, sometimes at extreme altitude (over 5,000 metres). Natural geographic conditions of Peru make the traditional electrication of grids very complicated and unsustainable, and much of the population has no access to a consistent power source.
Our solutions were able to by-pass the huge obstacles to bring electricity to rural areas. We designed, sourced and helped to implement our grid Solar Solutions for the Government of Peru, following their down-selection to support its programme via commercial tender. A Service catalogue approach was developed to create pre-integrated solutions for different site types: a low cost DC12V solution to power home systems, and separate AC220V solutions for schools and hospital clinics. Also included was a training and certification process to ensure knowledge transfer to communities benefitting from the approach.
