Job description


NRECA is looking for a Managing Director, Product and Business Strategy, who will be responsible for developing, marketing, managing, and maintaining viability of NRECA consulting services, products, and publications, with a particular focus on governance and cooperative Board support. Effectively stewards the best interests of these stakeholders in guiding and developing NRECA services. Responsible for providing leadership in product strategy and service delivery model development for America’s Electric Cooperatives and with developing partnerships with outside organizations, with an emphasis on discovering and implementing business and technology solutions for business model evolution. 

Cultivates and maintains effective relationships with CEOs, staff, and board of directors of the electric cooperative community by demonstrating knowledge of, and expertise in the business and management of America’s Electric Cooperatives.  Acts as a business advisor to the NRECA senior staff, providing insight into cooperative business practices and strategic challenges. Recognized as a thought leader on energy products and services and governance.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develops strategies to meet internal and external business and regulatory issues cooperativess face and leads deployment of consulting services to America’s Electric Cooperatives and outside organizations in organizational development, strategic planning, business and market plan development, management and operational audits, problem identification and solution development, policy development and technical consulting services such as management information system development/engineering and operations.

  2. Leads the development of market segmentation models. Produces financial analyses, projections, and pro-forma based on these proposed solutions. Uses statistical methods and applications to analyze customer applications and makes concrete recommendations regarding specifications and product design. 

  3. Analyzes and supports marketing plans to align with brand strategy and achieve annual operating plan goals. Monitors development process and ensures compliance to schedule and timeframe.

  4.  Defines customer segmentation and target groups. Assesses customer needs and requirements for defined segments and target accordingly, routinely requiring multidisciplinary projects and initiatives.  Creates an annual campaign plan with budget and expected ROI and define ROI for all campaigns.

  5. Designs, builds and drives the growth of a robust relationship ecosystem for our business to create strategic plans for forging and building these specific relationships. Designs and executes on specific initiatives that drive these relationships. Forges, builds and maintains essential relationships with top stakeholders. 

  6. Defines, develops and executes the annual regional strategic marketing plan through gathering and analyzing market research data. 

  7. Monitors market trends and information collected by the Association to identify potential areas for the development of new products and services, and the restructuring of existing products and services.  Takes new and modified products and services from concept to implementation across all lines of business for the target niche. Provides regular feedback toDepartment leadership, other NRECA departments and organizations of the membership on product requirements for local markets, including product specifications functionality, pricing and translation needs.

  8. Prepares and executes local product launches and report on expectations of market size, market uptake, market share and expected budgeted sales. Define product promotion and positioning for defined segments. Encourage cross-sell, up-sell among staff and Business Associates. Coaches all staff in becoming ambassadors to sell and market products and services.

  9. Represents NRECA before the board of directors of outside organizations such as the Cooperative Development Foundation, National Cooperative Business Association and Consumer Federation of America and serves as the liaison with external alliance partners.  Identifies and recruits alliance partners for alliance building efforts and new cooperative development activities.

  10. Represents NRECA at internal and external forums relating to alliance building and new cooperative development.  Acts independently to represent NRECA in public forums as the representative for the rural electric program and NRECA.

  11. Prepares and delivers speeches and moderates panel discussions for national, statewide and rural electric system meetings on new concepts, ideas and approaches in management and industry trends.  Delivers speeches to outside groups and associations, influencing internal and external audiences, as appropriate.

  12. Proactively works with internal departments (such as Education and Training, Communications, Touchstone Energy, Membership, IT, I&FS and others) and external partner organizations (such as Federated, CFC, CoBank, etc.) as appropriate on issues of mutual concern.

  13. Provides leadership to consultants and staff including setting clear expectations/goals/objectives; providing timely feedback, praise, coaching and recognition; promptly addressing performance or employee relations issues in accordance with NRECA policy; and assisting staff in upgrading skills and effectiveness.

  14. Effectively communicates activities and pertinent information covering areas of responsibility, both internally and externally, in writing and orally, as appropriate, to the Department leadership, other NRECA departments, NRECA Board, NRECA Committees, and committees and organizations of the membership.

  15. Designs and leads consulting models and high-profile assignments as a senior project manager responsible for timeliness of delivery, cost control and quality.  Conducts training assignments as appropriate, with emphasis on executive staff and board of director training.

Requirements and Qualifications


Formal Education Required: 

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Public Policy or related field.  Master’s degree preferred.


Experience Required: 

10+ years progressively responsible experience in cooperative business development, policy issues and alliance-building including experience with budgeting, strategic planning, marketing and sales pipeline management and 5 years at C-suite level.

  7. Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and make constructive suggestions for change as demonstrated by prior work experience.

  8. Ability to travel as demonstrated by prior work experience.

  9. Ability to use Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, Power Point) and MS Access in the day-to-day essential duties of the job as demonstrated by prior work experience.

  10. Ability to operate various office equipment such as personal computer, copier, printer, fax machine, 10-key adding machine, and multiple line telephone as demonstrated by prior work experience.

  11. Ability to provide service excellence by building relationships, being resourceful, responsive and respectful as demonstrated by prior work experience.

ADA Requirements:

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.

  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
