This project is a part of a Sino-Dutch Co Project for promotion of Rural Renewable Energy  in Western China developed in cooperation with the China Association of Rural Energy Industry with a budget of nearly € 6 million funded 90% by the Dutch government

The Hon Hu lake is situated in the Chinese province of Hubei. The lake is inhabited by 500 families who live in house boats. The school is a big boat with 6 class rooms, dormitory rooms, facilities for a medical service and an administration office.

Grid connection is not an option for them but renewable energies can provide them with electricity. In June 2006 the company Fortis installed a 5 kW hybrid system at the Bayl Primary school. The electricity is generated by a Fortis Montana wind turbine and a 1 kW PV system installed on the roof of the boat. A special hybrid inverter of 5 kW integrates the two sources with the battery bank and the consumption on school. The class rooms are provided with light, computers and internet through a mobile network
