The Board

President: Ernesto Macías, President, Wonder Energy

"The Alliance is a vital global network of innovative and dedicated professionals. We share the vision that renewable energy must become a substantial pillar of the energy mix of all countries."

Michel Mansard, Managing Director, Phaesun

“The Alliance could be compared to a cooperative bank where members deposit their capital in experience for customers to freely access in order to build a sustainable future. We are trying to make our bank as rich as possible to support our future. “

Michael Wollny, Director Sales Off-Grid Solutions, SMA

“We at SMA see enormous potential for renewable energy in developing countries. Mini-grids powered by hybrid systems are the ideal solution for the electrification of rural areas. They are efficient, reliable and climate friendly. However, the right technology is not enough. We need appropriate political and economic framework conditions to make renewable energy a success story.

ARE informs policymakers about what is needed to make renewable energy projects successful in the long run. In doing so, ARE prepares the ground for the RE markets of the future.“

Angelika Pullen, Communications Director, Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC)

"Rural electrification through renewable energies is not only a moral obligation for the renewables industry, but also a much underestimated business opportunity. ARE promotes practical and clean energy solutions for developing countries, thereby opening new markets for wind energy, and this work is highly valued by our members."

Balthasar Klimbie, Independent Consultant

"The experience of ARE's members can assist others creating a more mature market for decentralised electricity, so we can all benefit from the advantages of modern energy."

Claude Ruchet, R&D Manager, STUDER Innotec

"Only a broad and open sharing of experience will address effectively the challenges posed by rural electrification. The diversity of situations calls for different and targeted responses  for which ARE will play a role of promoter, catalyst and stimulus, encouraging the most appropriate and mature techniques.

Needs are immense, proven solutions are there. The willingness to implement them must be stimulated and ARE stands there with these challenges. Wise hybridization of renewable energy minimizing fossil energy uses will demonstrate its ability to cover the basic needs of the population currently not electrified".

Dirk Hendricks, Secretary General, European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA)

"Access to electricity is one of the keys to development, as it provides light, heat and power for productive uses and communication. Small hydropower has proven to be one of key technologies for the development of off-grid rural electrification."

Marco Seeman, Policy Adviser, Enel Green Power

“As recently pointed out by the IEA, approximately 22% of the world’s population still lacks access to electricity, with the majority of them living in rural areas and in developing countries. The IEA predicts that in 2030, in the absence of any new effective policy change, over 1 billion people will still remain without electricity. Renewable energies, such as photovoltaic, biomass, wind and small hydro, are optimal means of bringing electricity to remote and rural areas."

Anjali Shanker, Managing Director, IED
